This camp is geared toward a college experienced referee. The level of basketball by the players is one of , if not the best, competition of any camp in the country. Held in conjunction with the Nike Academy top 50 HS players . Coached by ex NBA players , the camp games will test your abilities and combined with a terrific student to instructor
( all NBA or D1 referees) ratio , of 2-1.
This is not one of the extortion camps but rather an instructional camp. Video tape as a learning tool, combined with an honest assessment of your skills , is just one of the benefits you will experience. Together with shoes and other NIKE gear you will receive as a Spoonman Referee Academy participant , we feel you will be pleased with the program.

THE STAFF
JT ORR #72
J.T. Orr has offficiated 375 regular-season games in seven seasons as an NBA referee.
Orr’s officiating experience includes five seasons in the NBA G League and 13 years at the collegiate level in the Pac-12, West Coast and Big West conferences, among others. He officiated the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Orr also has eight years of high school officiating experience in Southern California.
The California native previously spent more than 10 years as a counselor for young men in the foster care and probation systems of Los Angeles County.
JUSTIN VAN DUYNE #64
Justin Van Duyne has worked 221 regular-season games over four seasons as an NBA official. He also officiated 16 regular-season games as a non-staff official.
Van Duyne joined the NBA staff after four seasons as a referee in the NBA G League. He also officiated in numerous collegiate conferences, including the Pac-12, Mountain West, Big West, WCC and WAC.
The California native says the most memorable game he has officiated was his debut as a full-time NBA referee: Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings on Oct. 29, 2014.
He enjoys spending time with his three kids, golfing and boating.
JOHN BUTLER, G-LEAGUE #35
John Butler has been officiating for 9 years. He currently works NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Community College Basketball. For the past 5 years Butler has refereed in the Big West and West Coast Conferences. Also for the past 5 years Butler has officiated in the NBA G League. Butler has participated in the playoffs for the NBA G League for the past 3 seasons and worked the NBA G League Finals in 2018. Butler also has one year of experience in the WNBA. He currently wears #35 in both leagues.
MIKE SCYPHERS, NCAA DIVISION I
Mike Scyphers brings a wealth of expertise, knowledge and experience to the camp scene. He has been officiating over the span of the last 5 decades. Mike started his officiating career after playing 4 years of college basketball at Cal State University, Northridge.
In just a short time, he was invited to a Pac 10 tryout camp in 1982 in which he was hired into the conference. From there, Scyphers has gone on to officiate over 1500 Men’s Division 1 basketball games. He has worked 19 consecutive Men’s NCAA Division 1 tournaments. In those 19 years, he has whistled over 30 tournament games highlighted by an East Regional Final in 2007 played by North Carolina and Georgetown. He currently officiates in 6 different Division 1 conferences: Pac 12, Mountain West, West Coast, Big West, Western Athletic, and Big Sky. Scyphers has officiated 17 Big West Conference Tournament Championship games as well as several PAC, MWC, and WCC conference tournaments.
IAN CALDWELL, NCAA DIVISION I
Ian has been officiating basketball for 19 years. He started reffing YMCA when he was 16 years old. He currently works Division 1 in the Big West, Big Sky, WAC, and WCC. He also works many small college conferences in southern California.
